Summer Band Camps

West Texas A&M Summer Band Camp

One of the many great opportunities during the summer is band camp.  There are several offered throughout the state at college campuses.  One of the most highly recognized camps takes place at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.  During this two-week camp, students are given intensive instruction on their instruments, take part in a performing band, and enjoy a large number of recreational activities.

LISD Summer Band Camp

We have attached a flyer and registration form for the 2010 LISD Summer Band Camp on June 21-25 at Flower Mound High School. The directors highly recommend this camp to all of our students!  It is a great way to stay involved in music and to have fun with friends over the summer.  Please consider signing up for this inexpensive event.

Lamar Band Garage Sale *** Big Success ***

Saturday, April 10 - LHS Parking Lot

What a great day! Many parents, children and families came out today to help raise money for the Lamar Band Boosters! Thank You! While it was a lot of work, everyone was smiling and having fun. Getting involved with efforts like this allows the Band participate in different events that they otherwise would miss.

Special thanks to Jon Land for organizing this event. He and his team did a great job collecting, storing and transporting donations, organizing the volunteers and running the sale. Thanks Jon!

UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest

Congratulations to the students and directors of both bands. Your hard work and practice paid off - you all did a great job of representing  Lamar Middle School.

The Symphonic Band earned Sweepstakes again this year. In order to achieve this honor, the band must have a final score of 1 in both the concert and sight reading portions of the contest. Way to go!

Lamar Band Garage Sale

Saturday, April 10 - LHS Parking Lot

We need you! The sale is just a few short days away and we need your help to make sure it is successful.

Volunteers

We need volunteers for both shifts: 7a-11a, 10:30a-2:30p. There are just a few folks who have signed up and we need many more. Please sign up for one of these shifts. You can also bring your band students with you to help. Those that have come in the past have had a good time and they are very helpful.

Tables & Transport

We also need more tables, this is probably the 2nd greatest need.
We could use another couple of truck/van volunteers as well.

Sign up by clicking the hand on April 10 at the Charms calendar. You do not have to be a cleared LISD volunteer for this event because you are not interfacing with students at a student event.

Remember, you can take your donations to one of our two storage locations shown below.

   - Sheila and Todd DeDecker

   - Grettel and Steve Peck

You can also bring items to the sale location (LHS parking lot) on the morning of the sale.

Thank you for supporting the Lamar Band.

Pre-UIL Concert

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Our Symphonic and Concert students performed a Pre-UIL Concert at Marcus High School and did an amazing job.

The UIL competition involves playing pieces the band has been practicing as well as a sight reading exercise. Sight reading involves getting new music (never before seen by the band or Director) and having 7 minutes to learn and perform. It is an really cool experience.

One thing to note, this is not a competition with other bands. Each band is judged against a standard and given a score. Just kids vs. music.

Welcome 5th Grade Parents!

Mr. Hanna, Director of Lamar MS Bands, recently spoke at the 5th grade parent welcome event held at Lamar Middle School. What follows is a summary of his comments regarding your student becoming part of the Lamar Middle School Band family.

Want more information? Click here and follow the 4 easy steps.

Band will not only teach your child to be a musician but will give you child a place to “hang their hat.” Band fosters a real sense of family and is a positive force on keeping students on the path to success. Band helps academics. We work on higher level thinking skills every day. As such, band students consistently score higher on all standardized testing: TAKS, SAT and ACT. At Marcus High School, the top 25 ranked students are mostly members of the band. In addition, college admissions offices put much value on a student’s commitment to a band, orchestra or choir program throughout their secondary education.

Band teaches: self-confidence, coordination, teamwork, comprehension, problem solving, discipline, art appreciation, logic reasoning, value judgment using symbols and leadership.

Band gives kids a place to belong and a great peer group to belong to, which should give you the parent peace of mind that they are in a safe environment where they are encouraged to make good decisions.

Your child will have the opportunity to be a key part of a high achieving student organization. The Lamar Middle School and Marcus High School Bands are very successful. Recently the Marcus HS Band won back-to-back Texas 5A State Marching Championships and this year won the High Music Award at the Band of America national competition held in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Lamar MS Band is a Texas State Honor Band Finalist and recently won the National Wind Band Honors Recording competition.

If your child has any interest in studying music, Band is an excellent choice!

Thank You!

All-Region Clinic & Concert

What a marvelous performance the All-Region Bands put on Saturday night! As the master of ceremonies noted, the students spent six hours creating the show - putting together a masterful performance that they shared with the audience. It was unique & magic never to be created that same way again.

Pep Rally - Go Red For Women

Friday, February 5

In support of the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women," Lamar is holding a pep rally during school this Friday, February 5. We had originally asked the band students to wear their informal uniform. However, since they will be wearing the informal uniform for the Solo & Ensemble Contest on Saturday, we ask that they simply WEAR RED.

Once again, no uniform for Friday - just wear red!

Music Theory Exercises & Games

Ricci Adams first envisioned Musictheory.net during his senior year of high school. Soon afterwards, he created his first lesson: The Staff, Clefs, and Ledger Lines. The Interval Ear Trainer was developed a few weeks later and the site officially launched on January 1, 2000. Since that date, he has authored over thirty new lessons and several new trainers. Review the content from the site and have fun learning. You can even download it for offline use.

Holiday Break

School back in session Monday, January 4, 2010

What a year we've had so far! It is simply amazing how far the Beginning Band has progressed. They had a concert last Tuesday that was quite a treat.  Keep up the great work!

The Concert and Symphonic bands performed their Winter Concert on December 14 and put on a most spectacular show. The selection of music combined with the skill of the band under the direction of Mr. Hanna and Mrs. Aicher resulted in a wonderful afternoon.

Hopefully you ordered a CD to save these memories. If you did not, there may be some available - have your child check when school starts.

Happy HolidayHappy Holidays from the Lamar Middle School Band and Boosters!
